Tim AllenPartner - Real estate

Tim is the head of Bristows’ real estate practice. He specialises in providing strategic, commercial real estate advice that is tailored to client requirements. Greg’s extensive scientific background gives him a valuable understanding of technical issues that can underlie IP matters, particularly in the life sciences field. Cassie joined Bristows as an Associate in the <a href="/expertise/litigation-dispute-resolution/patent-litigation/">patent litigation</a> team in January 2024, where she works on matters in both the <a href="/expertise/sectors/technology/">technology</a> and <a href="/expertise/sectors/life-sciences/">life sciences</a> sectors. She has enjoyed a diverse range of UK litigation experience since joining Bristows, spanning from acting in <a href="/expertise/litigation-dispute-resolution/sep-frand-disputes/">SEP/FRAND</a> litigation on behalf of a multinational electronics company, to defending a client in a patent litigation dispute concerning omega-3 microbial oils. Cassie is a keen litigator and really enjoys working on cases with clients, and technologies, in both the life sciences and tech sectors. Cassie’s work on UK SEP/FRAND litigation to date has had a comparable licensing focus, and she has been involved in both licensing expert and factual evidence aspects of this litigation. Cassie’s work on a recent UK life sciences case has focused on refuting allegations of patent infringement and the respective counterclaims for patent invalidity. As well as UK litigation, Cassie also advises a client in the beverage industry on its freedom to operate projects for new drinking vessels. Nadine specialises in patent litigation and has advised on a range of complex disputes encompassing a variety of different subject matters. Nadine’s background in physics makes her particularly suited to work in the technology, telecommunications and engineering sectors. Her experience includes both patent infringement and validity work in a number of fields, ranging from consumer products to standard essential patents (SEPs), as well as FRAND and licence disputes. Nadine also has a lot of experience coordinating multi-jurisdictional actions in terms of both technical and strategic coordination for national and UPC claims. Jeremy is a leading trade mark, <a href="/expertise/litigation-dispute-resolution/brands-designs-copyright/">copyright and design</a> litigator and is described as “an incredible practitioner and a brilliant litigation strategist”. He regularly leads large teams in high value IP litigation. Jeremy’s practice covers clients who are household names in all sectors ranging from luxury goods, <a href="/expertise/sectors/technology/">technology</a>, pharmaceuticals, consumer goods and professional services. Edwin BondSenior Associate – Competition and Antitrust

Edwin works with businesses in the technology, pharmaceutical and consumer goods sectors on both contentious and non-contentious matters, and has particular experience of advising on the complex issues arising where competition law and IP law intersect.

James specialises in patent litigation. He is “technically very insightful” (Chambers 2024) and leaves “a very positive impact” on clients (JUVE 2024). James’ doctorate in optoelectronics and general background in physics provides him with a firm understanding of highly technical issues. Successful on appeal: reversing a first instance summary judgment decision on the grounds of lack of patentability, establishing the Aerotel test used for patentability of computer related inventions.</li> <li>Affymetrix v Multilyte – acting for Affymetrix in the successful revocation of immunoassay patents held by Multilyte.</li> </ul> James has taken on the role of advocate in the English Patents Court and in the Norwegian Oslo City Court. Andy Bowler is an IP litigator with 25 years’ experience. He is joint head of patent litigation. Andy acts for a range of leading companies across different sectors. In addition to UK litigation (including in the Supreme Court) and related advisory work, he is commonly called upon to coordinate patent litigation round the world.

Sean-Paul is dual English and Belgian qualified and has over 25 years of EU and UK competition law experience as both an advisor and an enforcer. His practice covers complex advisory work, merger control and competition litigation. Sean-Paul has extensive experience counselling clients in relation to the interaction between IP and competition law and issues arising in relation to potential dominance. He has been involved in contentious matters before the European Commission and UK authorities, has litigated cases before the European Community courts in Luxembourg, the UK Competition Appeals Tribunal and national courts in the UK and elsewhere. Francion has significant experience of competition litigation, including cases involving a cross-over with IP law. She has over 10 years’ experience of acting in FRAND cases for the likes of Samsung, Philips and Panasonic, with a particular focus on the competition law and economic valuation aspects of those cases. Francion also frequently advises on merger control and interactions with the CMA including investigations, market studies and third party RFIs. She has a particular interest in the new digital markets competition regime (under the DMCC Act) which establishes new powers for the CMA to regulate big tech firms in the UK. Since 2005, Brian has continuously handled the world-wide co-ordination of projects to manage the defence of patents and related rights for some of the world’s best-selling medicines ensuring that there is correctness, clarity and consistency in all countries. Over the course of eight years, Brian led the team at Bristows assist Novartis with the co-ordination of the defence and enforcement of IP rights in over 30 countries with a particular focus on challenges to the paediatric extension to the SPC for imatinib in Europe. The validity and infringement of Novartis’ second medical use patents for use of imatinib to treat GIST was also an important part of this project.</li> <li>Deferasirox – Acting for Novartis in the defence of its patents and SPCs for Exjade®. This involved UK litigation on challenges to the validity of (i) the paediatric extension granted to Novartis for deferasirox and (ii) a patent to a film-coated tablet for deferasirox as well as co-ordination across Europe including a successful application to the Dutch Court for a pan-European injunction.</li> <li>Fremanezumab – Acting for Teva in the defence of a challenge in the English Court to its patents for Ajovy® – a CGRP antibody used to treat migraine and cluster headache.</li> <li>Fasinumab – Acting for Teva and Regeneron in the English Patents Court in relation to anti-NGF antibodies being trialled for the treatment of osteoarthritis.</li> <li>Fingolimod – Acting for Novartis in relation to its patents for Gilenya® used to treat multiple sclerosis. Sophie has market-leading experience of cases involving FRAND licensing obligations, acting for both implementers and patentees. Over the last 15 years, Rachel has advised clients on global patent litigation matters across a broad range of topics, from pharma, biotech and medical devices cases to glass fibres and beer-dispensing machines. She has a particular interest in the chemical and life sciences sectors due to her background in chemistry. Eden has experience in representing clients in litigation before the English Courts and also as an Authorised Representative before the UPC. A particularly active area of Eden’s work in litigation is <a href="https://www.bristows.com/expertise/litigation-dispute-resolution/sep-frand-disputes/">SEP/FRAND</a> cases in the <a href="https://www.bristows.com/expertise/transactions/telecommunications/">telecoms</a> space. In addition to active litigation, Eden also regularly advises on freedom-to-operate projects, patent infringement and validity analysis, and offensive/defensive patent strategies. Technology areas of his previous work are wide-ranging and, in addition to telecoms, include voice coding, medical devices, consumer goods, AI and blockchain, oil and gas technology, aerospace engineering, process engineering, refrigeration systems, security systems, robotics and biometric analysis. Sara is an associate in the brands, designs and copyright team, advising on matters relating to all ‘soft’ IP rights including trade marks, designs, copyright and passing off as well as advertising compliance.

Harry advises on non-contentious intellectual property (IP) and technology matters across a wide range of sectors including pharmaceuticals, biotech, video gaming, film and other fields for which IP is of prime importance. He has a specific focus on transactions involving the development, transfer or exploitation of IP rights. He also regularly drafts settlement agreements. Harry works with clients at the cutting edge of research, development and technology, leveraging his scientific background in chemistry, including a master’s degree in inorganic catalysis. Harry also advises on the IP and technology aspects of corporate transactions including carve-outs, acquisitions, spin-outs and joint ventures. Media and entertainment, particularly video games and film, forms another key focus of Harry’s practice. He has a keen interest in the video gaming industry and utilises decades of experience passionately pursuing a hobby in the sector to supplement his legal experience for his media and entertainment clients.
